Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du Bois :: Fighting for Civil Rights

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois were very important African American leaders in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They both felt strongly that African Americans should not be treated unequally in terms of education and civil rights. They had strong beliefs that education was important for the African American community and stressed that educating African Americans would lead them into obtaining government positions, possibly resulting in social change. Although Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois had similar goals to achieve racial equality in the United States, they had strongly opposing approaches in improving the lives of the black population. Washington was a conservative activist who felt that the subordination to white leaders was crucial for African Americans in becoming successful and gaining political power. On the other hand, Du Bois took a radical approach and voiced his opinion through public literature and protest, m aking it clear that racial discrimination and segregation were intolerable. The opposing ideas of these African American leaders are illustrated in Du Bois’ short story, â€Å"Of the Coming of John†, where Du Bois implies his opposition to Washington’s ideas. He shows that the subordination of educated black individuals does not result in gaining respect or equality from the white community. In fact, he suggests that subordination would lead the black community to be further oppressed by whites. However contrasting their views might have been, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois were significant influential black leaders of their time, who changed the role of the black community in America.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Booker T. Washington’s ideologies for economic advancement and self-help played a major role in his approach to fight for equal rights. By founding the Tuskegee Institute in Mound Bayou, he created a university that was segregated for black students and encouraged higher educational standards (Meier 396). These students were also encouraged to follow the social system of segregation in order to achieve political status in the United States. In an interview with reporter Ralph McGill, Du Bois recalls that in the process of obtaining funds for the Tuskegee Institute â€Å"Washington would promise [white philanthropists] happy contented labor for their new enterprises. He reminded them there would be no strikers† (Du Bois, qtd. in McGill 5). This shows the nature of Washington’s contradicting approach in obtaining political power by embracing the system of segregation and working with white leaders rather than against the m to achieve his goals.

Jones Electrical Essay

As we can see from the figures and the information given in the present case, the company is very profitable due to the ambition and well management done by its owner Mr. Jones. In this regard, we can see in â€Å"Table 2 in the spreadsheet†, that the company is taking advantage of the 2% discount offered by suppliers saving around $75,000. 00 per year. We have to pay especial attention to the agreement reached with the former Co-owner of the company, Mr. Verden. This agreement is affecting the cash flow of the company since the interest expenses raises by around $12,000. 0 more per year, this together the financial interest of the Metropolitan’s Bank loan makes that the company needs a larger amount to finance its debts, that by the way regarding the agreement with Verden should not being paid by the company but by Jones personal income since this agreement was not reached between the company and Verden but between Verden and Jones. Furthermore, we are assuming that the company is paying this agreement since the Metropolitan’s interest rate if not will be of 12,45% per year which it seems to be very high for a bank of this kind. See Table 3 On the other hand, we have see that other and perhaps the most important factor making the company running out of cash is the fact that Jones uses to pay the invoices within 10 days so he can take advantage of the 2% discount instead of waiting the net payment due in 30 days while his accounts receivables are paid in average every 42 days. It is not necessary to explain what paying around hundred suppliers every 10 days represent to cash flows if the company is receiving payments every 42 days, this means that the company pays 4 times at 1 time receiving. This is, for sure, the main reason why the company is losing liquidity and need to borrow money to banks. See Table 5. Furthermore, we can see that the average rotation on accounts payables is 22 days as we can see from Table 10, this breaks the balance between the account receivables and accounts payables, this means that the company need to finance the difference (in this case 20 days approx. ) of working capital and the only way to finance it is through the company’s operations, by shareholders or with external resources which in the present case is through a bank loan. It would be also interesting to see what it the company’s financing policy on accounts receivables, this means what discount the company gives to its buyers and compare it with the discounts it receives from suppliers. Finally in order to overcome this situation the company need to review its financing policy and reduce the finance it gives to its clients so the rotation in accounts receivables period approaches to the rotation on accounts payables and thus correct the difference of approximately 20 days that is making the company look for further financing in external sources. . – Is Jones’s estimated that a $350,000. 00 line of credit is sufficient for 2007 accurate? From my point of view it seems to be accurate for the year of 2007. This answer is based of the calculation on working capital (see Table 8) and even stressing the methods used to calculate it, such as through the net operating working capital, which takes only into account the ways that the company has to generate cash and it most liquid debts, it means inventory, account receivables and account payables, we found that the figures were much better. See Table 11) On the other hand, if we take a look to the liquidity ratio (see Table 9) we found that the company’s ratio is above minimum relation required which is 1:1, this means that the company is producing enough cash to pay its debts. Nevertheless, as we said before, there a disparity in the financing policy of the company regarding the recovery period (account receivables) and the rotation on payables accounts that makes that the company requires external financing despite of having excellent numbers on the paper. Finally, I consider that the new credit line will be enough to pay the former credit with Metropolitan bank and there will still be $100 thousands dollars available that can be used by the company along the year since the restriction imposed by the bank are meet as we can see in Table 4 besides the company will be receiving payments during the year that will allow it to cover its debts and take advantage of the supplier discounts. Nevertheless, I insist in the fact that the company should revise its financing policy and the rotation of account receivables. . – What will happen to Jones’s financing needs beyond 2007? The financial needs of Jones Electrical will increase unless they change their policy on financing buyers while paying faster to their suppliers. This in deed is what is making that the company requires additional founds. On the other hand, the company has been growing constantly. In deed, according to the net income estimation for 2007 (see Table 7) the com pany increases its profits $25 thousand dollars more than the previous year. This is an evidence of how the company is been management and of its willing to grow year after year. Nevertheless, the first quarter of 2007 the working capital only has increased by $7 thousand dollars, which is the difference between the current assets and current liabilities but the importance of this is that according to the rotation on receivables and payable accounts, shown in Table 5 and 10, leads us to the conclusion that the company will have to pay its suppliers twice before it enters a single dime from its buyers. This clearly is the only reason and explanation to the question arose at the beginning of this analysis: â€Å"Why this profitable company needs a bank loan? † and the answer is found in tables 5 and 10, which is traduced into â€Å"an inadequate financing policy regarding receivables and payables accounts†. Finally, as a conclusion we can say that the company will still be needing more and more external resources to finance its buyers purchases due a inadequate financing policy that provoke unbalance in the requirements of working capital.

Cartesian Dualism And The Body Essay - 1009 Words

How many people have really thought about what the mind is? How is the mind connected to the body? Are they two separate things or are the body and the mind the same thing? There are different theories to answer these questions. A philosopher, Descarte, believes in Cartesian Dualism, which is that the mind and body both exist, but are two distinct things: physical stuff and mental stuff. The mind is not located in physical space and is an immaterial soul, whereas the body is a physical being and these two things are separate. This means that the mind is a non-material thing that includes our consciousness and soul. Basically, our body and brain are a container that holds our actual self which is our mind. The mind, spirit, and soul are immaterial and interact with our bodies. The opposite view of Cartesian Dualism is called materialism. This says that the spirit does not exist because everything that exists is made from physical materials, such as the brain and the human mind. Our bo dy and mind are the same thing. Although Descarte believes in Cartesian Dualism, there are many arguments for and against it. One argument that is against it is called the Continuity of Nature Argument against Cartesian Dualism. This argument describes that nature is a continuous thing. For instance, being tan is a very vague characteristic and it’s on a continuous scale. There is no sharp boundary of tan people and pale people. There can be a â€Å"grey† area. There are degrees of being tan.Show MoreRelatedThe Mind Body Problem And Cartesian Dualism1024 Words   |  5 PagesDayna Gelman Justin Pannell April 24, 2015 PHI 107 The Mind-Body Problem and Cartesian Dualism In this paper I will argue for Cartesian dualism to be the most plausible solution to the mind-body problem. The Goals Of An Introductory Course Within Any Subject Field

The goal of an introductory course within any subject field is an ambitious one indeed: to introduce a group of students to a novel field of study. While that may seem simply accomplished, its complexity is borne out within its application. For instance, the field of philosophy represents a multitude of subcategories ranging from metaphysics to jurisprudence. However, within an introduction to philosophy course, instructors compress this ostensibly infinite subject matter into a finite number of weeks. So too, in the field of public administration that encompasses every corner of the body politic. That said, what utility is gained from such an extreme compression of information? I argue that the introduction to different divisions and different methodologies within a field of study helps establish foundational principles within the minds of those students. Within our exploration into the introductory themes within public administration, we have been exposed to concepts that, I believ e, are significant principles in an overarching understanding of the field. The principles are as follows: the differentiation of the public and private sector, the political nature of public administration, the intergovernmental environment of public administration, the variation in organizing within public organizations, and the role of ethics within public organizations. What follows is a brief elucidation of these concepts and their utility to frontline administrators. They is sat and watched with the barn animals outside the cows, horse chickens and his dog George. As the storm grew bigger, heavier and gradually crept closer the excitement grew within the children; of Jenny, Charlotte and Ginny went to join their brother Oscar in the far shed, despite what their mother had told them to stay in the house as nothing good would come from being closer to the storm. Waiting for the storm to arrive took a lot long the children first thought of, as they waited they got hungry, got tired and slowly started to fall asleep. A loud clap of thunder shoock the shed awaking thall of the children that were now fast asleep. Jenny the oldest, opened the door to see what was the problem; as Ginny and Charlotte watched from the window pressing their faces against it waiting to see what they could see. Oscar just sat still as a Nome awaiting the reply of one of his sister to tell him what happening as he was afraid of what, was going to happen next. Franticly from the window Charlotte saw Jenny running back with a worried look on her face. As she tried to open the shed door the pressure from the wind flooded in slamming it into the wall, sending the loose had flying around the shed, creating a tornado of sharp, prickly hay. The force of the wind and the hay broke the window that was above Ginny. It broke on to her lap, cutting her leg. It was a small but deep cut, that oozed red thick blood. Oscar ran into the storage room grabbing sheets and ripping them apart and tying them around her arm. Now the storm was too fierce to run back through the grass to the house. All they could do now was wait and hope for the storm to be over soon. They pressed themselves against the wall pressing their faces one against one huddling and staying warm. Oscar heard an animal cry coming from outside. He went to investigate from the shattered window above. He saw the horses, cows, chickens squeezing and running for shelter under the big oak tree 20 metres away. A sudden scratch was heard at the door. But not knowing what it was he didn’t opening the door. Through a jagged small hole in the wall their beloved god George squeezed through, wet, scared and tired. They battle in the sky grew louder and louder, all around them all that could be heard was thunder, hail and lightning in the sky, shinning like diamonds. The time slowly passed, one hour; two hours gone slowly they feel deep, deep asleep. Ginny dreamed of a rainbow all the colours filling the sky. Oscar dreamed of the smell of bacon being swept up in the wind from his mums cooking, Charlotte dreamed of a cubby house where she could play day in and day out. AS Jenny did not have dream but a nightmare. Thinking of the worst possible outcome for tomorrow; waking up, no siblings around her, no shelter above, and only scraps of the house spread in the distant paddocks. Knowing she had no one left, no rainbow, no smell of bacon, no cubby house, nothing. Her nightmare shook her around, flinching in her sleep she awoke. Slowly she crawled to the door and opened it and saw a bright blue sky and yellow sun with a colourful rainbow painted in the sky above it was morning. High pitched scream destruction the storm caused as the most important things were there her siblings. A whiff of bacon was smell as it passed through the door, their mother was safe and what cooking them breakfast. All of the dream were true as in the distance there cubby house was still standing. The perfect storm had come to an end. Was heard from her mouth as the storm was over her worst nightmare was gone they survived the tormenting thunder and hail and best of all she could see her siblings. Charlotte, Ginny and Oscar woke up by the scream and were compressed together underneath Jenny’s body. NOAA page for the â€Å"Perfect Storm† http://www. ncdc. noaa. gov/oa/satellite/satelliteseye/cyclones/pfctstorm91/pfctstorm. html The following websites will be useful to develop maps. http://www. cdc. noaa. gov/Composites/Day/ http://www. cdc. noaa. gov/cgi-bin/Composites/printpage. l To characterize the storm and its development, and to relate these factors to the story, you may map any variable/aspect of the days that these events were occurring. Consider and present factors such as storm intensity and track, fronts, jet stream and surface winds. I suggest using (mapping) some of the following variables: temperature, specific humidity (for moisture), vector wind and geopotential height (to show pressure disturbances) to represent the atmosphere at the surface, and possibly at other levels such as the lower troposphere (850 mb), middle troposphere (500 mb) and upper troposphere (300 mb). Based on what you know of storms, describe how the atmospheric environment contributed to the development of the weather systems that destroyed the Andrea Gail. You have been given the what, the when and the where – you must provide the why and the how. Deliverables: Technical memorandum: Minimum of 3 typed pages of text diagnosing the weather event and relating specific portions of the storm’s anatomy to the location of the vessels and events in The Perfect Storm, plus maps. Task 6 P5 – Design a promotional campaign for a given product/service to meet the needs of a given campaign/creative brief. Imagine that you are an agency given the opportunity to make a pitch for a promotional campaign for your selected higher education institution. The brief is: ‘We want to encourage our students to make more use of our catering facilities, which are being improved to make them more attractive to existing and potential students. Obviously we are aware of the increasing financial burden for our students so we have been looking at providing good value food in attractive surroundings. We are looking for a cost-effective promotional campaign to launch our updated cafe bar and we would like to incorporate some local radio adverts, an entry into the university’s student publications and some flyers. We haven’t decided on a name for our new facility yet. Our budget for this is  £5000.’ Using the above information, design a short campaign for the launch of the cafe bar, including: a) a name for the new facility — consider the branding and what this name might convey b) a design for a flyer c) a script for the radio advert d) a costed media schedule — you will need to investigate the cost of local radio advertisements and use a table/Gantt chart to show what activities will take place and when. This information will be passed on to the university’s marketing department for consideration. Wk 5 6 Task 7 M2 – Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using professional agencies in ensuring promotional success. The marketing department is reasonably satisfied with your brief, but is a little concerned about the need to use a professional agency rather than do this in-house. Write a short report explaining the merits of using a professional agency to ensure the success of this type of promotional campaign.
